History

It history

The construction of Guadamur Castle began in the mid-15th century by order of D. Pedro López de Ayala.

Throughout its history, the castle has hosted important figures such as Juana La Loca, Felipe El Hermoso, Carlos V and Cardinal Cisneros.

The castle’s initial function was defensive, serving as a safe refuge during a time of continuous political and military conflicts.

Guadamur Castle would become a symbol of the economic and political power of the count of Fuensalida. In feudal times, a lord’s pride was often revealed through the strength of their fortress.

It arquitectonical structure

The castle’s beautiful architecture, with its clear Italian influence, has remained practically intact to this day. It is attributed to Juan Guas.

The fortress is surrounded by a moat crossed by a drawbridge that leads to the main gate, under the coat of arms of the Count of Asalto, and to the parade ground defended by towers and spurs. The walls of the castle are decorated with the coat of arms of the López de Ayala family.

Its impressive keep, 30 meters high, is a fundamental element for the castle’s defense.

The door to the inner enclosure leads to the hall with original Latin inscriptions on the friezes. From here, you can access the dining room with its flamboyant Gothic fireplace, and the monumental staircase that leads to the noble parts of the castle.
